Last Carnival more than five thousand stickfight afficiandos witnessed the National Stickfighting Championship Finals in New Grant near Princes Town. Several thousands more had already enjoyed preliminaries in Sangre Grande, Mayaro, San Fernando and Belmont. Stickfight gayelles all over Trinidad in 1996 provided Carnival excitement and sustained areas of intensity from New Years Day to Carnival Monday. In the process, the activities continued to create elements of uniqueness In the Carnival celebrations of Trinidad and Tobago. The glorious days of Trinidad carnival long ago featured stickfighting as a main attraction influenced by remembered celebrations in Africa, the medieval times in England and the Ghalka of India. Every estate from the 1700's had its band of stickfighter's and in recent times, stickfight activities have been attracting more and more supporters who have been experiencing and liking this vital feature of Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago. | |||||
